Mascots of Local Governments in Japan

# FACT 3

4,000: The estimated number of official local-government mascots in Japan in 2016.

COLOURS

Through the collection of data, I found that Japan actually does not have so many local governments so l thought of using the pie chart to represent the quantity difference as it is one of the most stereotypically statistical charts. Japanese local governments are represented by one of Japan'smost famous mascots, the Kumamon.

The most challenging aspect of my design was the combination of facts and graphs. At first, I didn't have any design ideas about the actual local governments in Japan. Simply combined the head of the Kumamon with the pie chart and expressed the data difference between with the virtual lines and the real Kumamon face is not harmonious. The design deviated from the content expression of the fact, that is, comparing the two subjects was not clear. Until l found the logo of Japanese local governments, the layout issue finally worked out and the combination with the pie chart was improved to present the ultimate ideal effect.

In terms of colour combination, I kept the original colour matching of the two subjects to the greatest extent. The background colour was initially grey, but for the government and official organisations, grey was very weak, and lacked authority and gravitas. Finally, a light blue background similar to the logo of the local government organisation was chosen to make the picture harmonious and unified.
